Keeping commercial grounds presentable through an Alabama summer

A commercial property is judged from the parking lot. Long before anybody sees how clean your floors are, they have walked past the beds, the edges and the grass. In north Alabama that frontage changes fast. Growth through late spring and summer is quick, weather is not gentle, and a property that looked sharp three weeks ago can look neglected without anything actually going wrong.

Cutting is the least of it

Mowing is the visible part and the part everybody prices, but it is rarely what makes a commercial property look cared for. Two properties cut on the same day can look completely different, and the difference is almost always the edges and the beds.

• Edging along walks, curbs and parking islands. A clean edge line reads as deliberate. A soft one reads as overgrown even when the grass is short.
• Trimming around posts, signs, hydrants, dumpster enclosures and building corners, which a mower cannot reach and which are exactly where the eye goes.
• Bed lines cut and held, so the border between mulch and turf is a line rather than a gradient.
• Pruning to keep shrubs off the building, away from windows and clear of signage and lighting.
• Foliage removal, so clippings and debris leave the site instead of blowing back across it.

Mulch is doing a job, not just looking tidy

Fresh mulch is the single fastest way to make a commercial frontage look maintained, which is why it gets treated as cosmetic. It is doing more than that. It holds moisture in the bed through the hottest part of the year, keeps soil temperature steadier, and suppresses a good share of the weeds that would otherwise need pulling or spraying later.

It also has to be done properly. Mulch piled against stems and trunks holds moisture where the plant does not want it. The bed needs turning over and the line needs re cutting, otherwise you are just adding a layer on top of last year's compacted one.

Bedding gives you colour at the entrance and it is high impact for the money, but it is the part of the grounds that punishes neglect fastest. A bed that is watered, dead headed and kept clear looks intentional. The same bed three weeks later, in an Alabama August, does not. If you want beds, they need to be on the schedule rather than done once at the start of the season.

What to ask for in a grounds quote

Ask for the frequency of each item rather than a single monthly figure. Cutting, edging, trimming, bed maintenance, pruning and mulch work all run on different cycles, and a quote that bundles them into one line is a quote you cannot check. Ask what happens to debris. Ask what the schedule looks like in July compared to November, because it should not be the same.
